The first experiences in the field of the ITM Srl team date back to over ten years ago, when the original project, ITC Cooperative, was started and began to establish itself as a leader in the international market of translation, interpreting, and cultural mediation. The same professionals who today form part of ITM Srl come from the ITC Cooperative, from which ITM has inherited the staff, skills and experiences that serve to take care of your needs.
The ITC Cooperative, today ITM Srl, has years of activity throughout Europe behind it, has taken care of countless projects as well as communication in countless areas. What you will read is not a ranking, in our work it is not healthy to give a score to communication needs. Nonetheless, there are projects that can help to understand who we are and what we are about, but above all HOW we do things.
Since 2016, we have regularly assisted the European Union Agency for Asylum – EUAA (formerly the European Asylum Support Office – EASO). Our commitment is mainly aimed at relocation activities, including identification and registration procedures, and assistance for migrants and asylum seekers during hearings for the recognition of International Protection. Our interpreters and cultural mediators are employed in Belgium, Greece, Italy, Bulgaria, Malta, Cyprus, Lithuania, Latvia and Romania at local hotspots/hubs and reception centres for migrants and asylum seekers. In Italy alone we are present in numerous hotspots/reception centres and offer our services at Police Headquarters.
The service in question, as you can guess, is extremely complex from organizational and operational points of view, and is geared to assisting the EUAA case-workersand officials from linguistic and cultural points of view. Our work is aimed at strengthening asylum and reception services in EU Member States for migrants/applicants for international protection.
From 15 June 2020 to 13 December 2021, we provided professional interpreting for the Reception and Identification Service of the Hellenic Ministry of Migration Policies (RIS). This project involved the daily supply of 100 interpreters, specializing in the languages most used by migrants and asylum seekers welcomed by the reception centres of the Greek islands of Chios, Kos, Leros, Samos and Lesbos, as well as in the village of Fylakio and the cities of Athens and Thessaloniki.
The interpreters’ task was to foster dialogue between foreign users of the Greek reception circuit and local authorities. These same services were also provided remotely, online, via videoconference or telephone interpreting. The remote interpreting service has become increasingly popular over the last few years, to the mutual satisfaction of ourselves and our partners.
Since November 2019, we have been taking part in a linguistic-cultural mediation project in support of all public or affiliated structures belonging to the Health Service of the Autonomous Region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia. In this case, intercultural mediation is essential to help foreign citizens access the related services for the protection of their health, ensuring a rapid and complete response to health needs, which involve specific cultural aspects. The ITC Cooperative, today ITM, helps these citizens to feel at ease and to successfully integrate in the territory. At the same time, ITM offers support to overcome bureaucratic, administrative, social, linguistic and cultural hurdles which could constitute risk factors for the health of a migrant population. This critical issue has obviously been made even more urgent by the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. Precisely in view of the pandemic, from a professional and organizational point of view, these services have been provided online, through remote interpreting, since the first months of 2020.
The current management of consecutive interpreting and translation services for the Territorial Commissions for the Recognition of International Protection covers the Police Headquarters of Bologna, Caserta, Catania, Foggia, Naples, Padua, Rome, Syracuse, Trapani, Treviso and Udine. Due to the ongoing epidemiological emergency, the services in question are often provided online, through remote interpreting, in particular those for the Territorial Commission of Rome.
With regard to professional interpreting services, throughout the year 2020 a service of finding and coordinating interpreters was provided to meet the requests of the Diplomatic Protocol of the Italian Republic during the visit of delegations of foreign governments to Italy, in particular at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation..
From September 2019 to January 2020, a linguistic-cultural mediation service was provided to support the Central Anti-Crime Directorate of the State Police as part of the HOME / 2017 / ISFB / AG / EMAS / 0054-FALCO project. The ambitious common goal was to improve the monitoring of migration flows and combat crimes related to trafficking in human beings during the surveillance of the external borders. The purpose of the service, in particular, was to facilitate communication between State Police operators and foreigners during investigations on migratory flows and illegal landings, rescue and / or disembarkation of migrants, pre-identification, photography, fingerprinting and registration, considered crucial activities for an optimal management of the migratory phenomenon.
From July 2014 to February 2020, a linguistic-cultural mediation service was provided to support theDepartment of Social Affairs, Subsidiarity and Health Care of the Municipality of Rome which provided invaluable linguistic and cultural aid to the operatives and social workers of the Department in assisting unaccompanied foreign minors, some of whom are asylum seekers, admitted to the capital’s reception circuit.
