Interpreti Traduttori Mediatori srl (“ITM”) is a company of interpreters, cultural mediators and translators, a leading point of reference in Italy in the fields of interpreting, translation and linguistic-cultural mediation. It holds the Quality Certifications ISO 9001:2015 for interpreting, translation and linguistic mediation services, and ISO 17100:2017 for its translation service.
On 24 January 2022 ITM acquired the business branch of the cooperative ITC – Interpreti e Traduttori in Cooperativa (please refer to the transfer deed attached to the tender documentation), acquiring the economic, technical and professional capabilities of the cooperative in the provision and management of interpreting and cultural mediation services. Since 2016 it has provided professional linguistic-cultural mediation and interpreting services to the European Union Agency for Asylum – EUAA (formerly the European Asylum Support Office – EASO) during relocation programmes that include identification and registration procedures, and it provides assistance to migrants and asylum seekers during interviews for the recognition of International Protection. Specifically, the activities have been and are being carried out in Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Finland, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Lithuania, Latvia, Malta, the Netherlands, Slovenia, Spain and Romania, at local hotspots/hubs and reception centres for migrants and asylum seekers, and in Italy at numerous hotspots/reception centres and police headquarters throughout the national territory. The service, extremely complex from an organisational and operational point of view, is aimed at assisting EUAA case-workers and officials from a linguistic and cultural standpoint, in order to strengthen asylum and reception services in EU Member States for migrants and applicants for international protection.
From 2005 ITC, now ITM, has provided consecutive interpreting and translation services for the Territorial Commissions for the Recognition of International Protection established at numerous Italian Prefectures. The service covers both the investigation phase (gathering all useful information and documentation on applicants’ countries of origin, including documents produced in the original language by the applicant, for an in-depth examination of asylum applications) and the decision phase, with particular reference to the hearing and interviewing of applicants by the Territorial Authority. ITM has managed and/or manages the interpreting service at the Prefectures of Agrigento, Ancona, Bari, Bologna, Brescia, Caserta, Catania, Crotone, Florence, Foggia, Forlì-Cesena, Genoa, Lecce, Livorno, Milan, Monza, Naples, Novara, Padua, Palermo, Rome, Salerno, Syracuse, Turin, Trapani, Treviso, Trieste, Udine and Vicenza, as well as in support of the National Commission for the Right of Asylum.
Since November 2019, we have delivered a linguistic-cultural mediation project in support of all public or accredited facilities belonging to the Health Service of the Autonomous Region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia. In this case, intercultural mediation is essential to help foreign citizens access services for the protection of their health, guaranteeing a response to health needs that involve specific cultural aspects, helping them feel at ease and integrate into the territory. At the same time, they are helped to overcome bureaucratic, administrative, social, linguistic and cultural obstacles that may constitute risk factors for the health of a migrant population. And, in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, from a professional and organisational point of view, some services have been delivered remotely since the first months of 2020.
From September 2019 to January 2020, from August 2023 to February 2024, and from June 2024 to April 2025, a linguistic-cultural mediation service was provided in support of the Central Anti-Crime Directorate of the State Police as part of the FALCO project “Action to improve the monitoring of migration flows and combat crimes linked to human trafficking during the surveillance of external borders”. The purpose of this service was to facilitate communication between State Police officers and foreign nationals during investigations into migration flows and illegal landings, the rescue and/or landing of migrants, pre-identification, photographing, fingerprinting and registration, considered crucial activities for the optimal management of the migration phenomenon.
From June 2020 to December 2021, professional interpreting services were provided for the Reception and Identification Service of the Hellenic Ministry of Migration Policies (RIS). The project involved the daily supply of 100 interpreters, specialised in the languages most used by migrants and asylum seekers hosted in the reception centres of the Greek islands of Chios, Kos, Leros, Samos and Lesbos, as well as in the city of Fylakio and the cities of Athens and Thessaloniki. The task of the interpreters was to facilitate dialogue between foreign users of the Greek reception system and local authorities. These services have also been provided remotely, by videoconference or telephone interpreting.
From August 2020 to December 2021, linguistic-cultural experts in various languages (interpreting and cultural mediation services) were provided to FRONTEX for operations carried out in various locations in Spain and Greece. Border checks are carried out at EU entry points by road and rail. In addition to these checkpoints, Frontex guards carry out surveillance along land borders. As for all border controls, sea border monitoring consists of checks carried out at port crossings, since thousands of migrants attempt to reach the EU by sea every year.
From July 2014 to February 2020, a linguistic-cultural mediation service was provided in support of the Department for Social Policies, Subsidiarity and Health of the Municipality of Rome, which gave valuable linguistic and cultural assistance to the operators and social workers of the Department for the Assistance of Unaccompanied Foreign Minors, some of whom were asylum seekers, admitted to the capital’s reception system.
